Astronomers have detected unusual radio signals and massive material jets from the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, revealing its enormous size and strange activity as it approaches Earth, raising questions about whether it is a natural comet or something far more extraordinary.

In a discovery that has stunned astronomers worldwide, a mysterious interstellar visitor known as 3I/ATLAS is currently hurtling through our Solar System, exhibiting baffling activity unlike any comet observed before.
Using South Africa’s powerful MeerKAT radio telescope, researchers detected hydroxyl radicals surrounding the object on October 24, creating a distinctive radio signature that may reveal its composition.
Initial analysis suggests that the object measures up to six miles across and has a frigid surface temperature of –45°F. Optical imaging captured on November 9 revealed gigantic jets of material stretching nearly 600,000 miles sunward and 1.8 million miles in the opposite
direction, dwarfing anything seen in familiar comets and rivaling celestial distances roughly equivalent to the diameter of the Sun.
Professor Avi Loeb of Harvard, who has been tracking 3I/ATLAS since the summer, emphasized the unprecedented scale and intensity of the ejected material.
If this object were a conventional comet, the jets would require months to reach the observed distances, moving at far slower speeds.
Instead, the rapid expansion, immense mass, and brightness of the outflows defy conventional cometary physics, suggesting something extraordinary may be occurring.

At its current distance of 203 million miles from Earth, the sheer scale of activity is providing scientists with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study interstellar phenomena in real time.
Comparisons to 1I/‘Oumuamua, the first interstellar object detected in 2017, highlight just how massive 3I/ATLAS is, with estimates placing it at least three miles in diameter, possibly as much as six, while ‘Oumuamua was merely a few hundred feet across.
The implications of these findings are staggering. Beyond its unusual size and rapid activity, 3I/ATLAS is on a trajectory that will bring it closest to Earth on December 19.
At that time, space telescopes such as Hubble and James Webb will focus on the object to precisely measure its velocity, composition, and the total mass of its expansive jets.
Scientists hope these observations will clarify whether this interstellar intruder is a massive icy comet behaving unusually, or potentially a technological artifact propelled by advanced thrusters, capable of producing similar effects without shedding enormous mass.
Adding to the intrigue, NASA’s Juno spacecraft is scheduled to probe the object on March 16, 2026, as it passes within 33 million miles of Jupiter, using its dipole antenna to detect low-frequency radio emissions, potentially revealing signals of unnatural origin.

Astronomers and space enthusiasts alike are watching closely as 3I/ATLAS aligns within nine degrees of the direction of the enigmatic 1977 ‘Wow!’ Signal, a historic unexplained radio signal that has fueled decades of speculation about extraterrestrial intelligence.
The combination of radio and optical observations is proving critical for understanding the object’s extraordinary behavior. Its massive material jets, extreme density, and rapid brightening near perihelion present anomalies that challenge current cometary science.
Researchers around the globe are monitoring the situation in real time, sharing data to determine whether 3I/ATLAS is simply a natural interstellar visitor or something far more extraordinary—a cosmic visitor that could reshape our understanding of what exists beyond the Solar System.
Already, the interstellar object has captured imaginations across the scientific community and the public alike.
The sheer scale of the outflows, stretching over a million miles in either direction, raises fundamental questions: Can a natural comet produce such extraordinary effects?
Are we witnessing an unknown type of interstellar body? Or could these jets hint at advanced propulsion mechanisms previously unseen in natural celestial objects?
Professor Loeb emphasizes that the upcoming observations in December are critical, noting, “3I/ATLAS is giving us a rare opportunity to study an interstellar object in real time.
The combination of radio and optical data shows it is shedding massive amounts of material, moving at incredible speeds, and behaving in ways that challenge our understanding of natural comets.”

The scientific community is abuzz with anticipation, with telescopes worldwide tracking its every move.
The object’s unusual characteristics—its enormous size, high-speed ejections, and potential alignment with historically mysterious signals—make it one of the most intriguing celestial visitors in recorded history.
As it approaches its closest point to Earth, astronomers will gather unprecedented data, potentially uncovering secrets about interstellar matter, cosmic formation, or even the tantalizing possibility of artificial propulsion.
For now, 3I/ATLAS remains a cosmic enigma, a blazing interstellar mystery streaking silently through the void yet screaming clues through radio waves and immense material jets, daring humanity to understand the true nature of this celestial visitor.
This once-in-a-lifetime event will unfold before the world’s eyes, with the potential to redefine our understanding of the universe. Is 3I/ATLAS just a massive, unusually active comet, or could it be the first evidence of extraterrestrial engineering?
The coming months promise answers—or even deeper mysteries—about a visitor from the stars that has arrived, sending signals and massive streams of matter across space, challenging what we think we know about the cosmos and the forces at play beyond our solar neighborhood.
